There are several trains of thought regarding treatment of low grade fever. I’m with the group of physicians who believe that low grade fevers do not need to be treated unless they cause the patient severe discomfort. Fever is a physiologic response to bacterial/viral infection and the increase in temperature serves several purposes. First, it increases circulation of blood by dilating blood vessels. Secondly, fever is the result of an active immune system and aids enhances the immunologic processes that destroy the invading microbes. Lastly, higher temperatures make it inhospitable for microbes and therefore hinder their reproduction.
Therefore, fever has beneficial effects and I would not recommend treatment of low grade fever unless the patient is suffering extreme discomfort.
