My doctor says I have keloids. I cut myself on the chin a few days ago. Is there anything I can do to stop the scaring?

Keloids are benign lesions that arise in scars because of an overgrowth of the scar tissue.  These lesions can be quite large and can often cause pain if nerves are involved.  Physicians can apply silicone gel on developing lesions to minimize pain and prevent growth of a keloid.  Alternatively, injection of corticosteroids into the developing keloids can also be helpful.  Up to 80% patients have a positive response to this treatment but keloids can often recur.  Your treatment options depend on your symptoms and appearance of your scar.  Therefore, proper medical evaluation is necessary prior to initiating treatment.
