If there is an absence of fetal heart sounds, then it is presumed the fetus has passed and the condition is termed either missed abortion or intrauterine death.
If the fetal demise occurred before 4 months. Patients may elect to do nothing and wait for a spontaneous abortion to occur within a few weeks. Alternatively, patients may elect to have a dilation and currettage.
In the event the fetal demise occurs after 4 months, patients are often offered an induction of labor to deliver the fetus within 4 weeks or elect to spontaneously go into labor.
In the case you described, waiting 1-2 weeks is not a significant health risk. However, if the fetus has not been spontaneously delivered within 4 weeks, then there is a progressively higher risk of developing a coagulopathy.
