Who should be tested for diabetes?

In addition to pregnant women, all people over the age of 45 get their fasting blood glucose measured to screen for diabetes every 3 years if they don’t have any risk factors.

The American Diabetes Association also recommends that patients get screened earlier and more frequently if they have any risk factors such as:

  1. Familyhistory of diabetes in 1st degree relative
  2. Obesity
  3. High cholesterol or triglycerides
  4. Hypertension
  5. Impaired glucose tolerance (often determined during pregnancy)
  6. History of vascular disease
  7. Habitual physical inactivity
  8. History of gestational diabetes
  9. History of delivering a baby over 9 lbs.
  10. History of polycystic ovarian syndrome
  11. In a high risk race (African American or Hispanic)
