What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins affect up to 55% of women and 45% of men with incidence increasing with increased age. Varicose veins are the damaged and enlarged superficial veins that become blue and resemble twisted cords. They are often found on the lower body behind the knees, on the calves, thighs, and even in the pelvic area and buttocks. Varicose veins are caused by weak or damaged valves in these veins because of the effects of gravity and the unique valves found in lower extremity veins. Age, genetics, hormonal changes (pregnancy, and menopause), sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and trauma all increase the risk of developing varicose veins. Therefore, to prevent the formation of varicose veins, one should have a healthy exercise routine, maintain a healthy weight, and avoid prolonged sitting or crossing of legs.S
